    Age and the HUD Code

The HUD Code is the federal construction and safety standard for manufactured homes, in effect since June 15, 1976. Homes built to it carry a HUD certification label on the outside of each section and a data plate inside listing the manufacturer, build date and wind zone. Homes built earlier are usually called mobile homes.

    Width, permits and escorts

Arkansas treats anything over 8 ft wide or 60 ft long as a manufactured home unit that needs an ARDOT permit for each move. Width also sets how many escort cars are needed and when the home may travel. No permit is issued above 18 ft wide.

    Setting it up again

Blocking, leveling, anchoring and joining sections is installation work. In Arkansas it must be done by an installer licensed with the Manufactured Home Commission, and each installation gets a permit decal. Check any company on the AMHC license search.

    Moving it yourself

ARDOT rules let an owner get a special permit to move their own home if it is no more than 12 ft wide, with acceptable insurance, title to the home and a pulling truck of at least one-ton factory rated capacity.
